Finding a Suitable Double Glazing Installer

There are literally thousands of double glazing installers in the UK and unfortunately not all of them are as reputable as you would like. So how do you choose a suitable company to install your new windows?

Top tips for choosing a double glazing installer

  • Ask for a number of quotes from different installers. Get at least three so you can be sure you aren’t being overcharged by a particular company. Be aware though that some companies charge for quotations so check that they are free, no obligations quotes before you book an appointment.
  • Check that the installer you’re interested in has knowledge and experience of the types of windows you want. The last thing you need is to have the work done by someone who has no experience of your particular type of window, especially if they require special skills to fit them.
  • Ask to see pictures of the installer’s past projects, or alternatively ask for references from previous customers. Any double glazing installer that takes pride in his work will have some form of portfolio to show potential clients. If they don’t and they can’t put you in contact with happy customers then it may be that they don’t have the kind of history you’re looking for.
  • Check that the price you’re paying includes tidying up any mess created and the removal of the old windows from your property. Some companies won’t include the removal charge in the original quote and will charge separately for the service should you require it. Other companies though will take the old windows away for no extra cost.
  • Tell the installer that you have an idea of what you want but then ask for their suggestions. If they show you an entire range with plenty of choice and a good price range then chances are they aren’t trying to talk you into highly expensive windows that you probably can’t afford.
  • Finally, make sure you choose an installer that is registered with FENSA or a similar authority. All windows replaced or installed after 2002 have to be certified by FENSA so that it is known they comply with the Building Regulations Document L. Choosing a FENSA approved installer with ensure that your windows are certified.

Finding a double glazing installer

Before you can choose an installer, you have to find one and the best way to do this is by word of mouth. Ask your friends and family if they have used the services of a double glazing installer that they would happily recommend. If not ask if they know of anyone who may be able to make a recommendation instead.

If nothing comes of this then you might want to try the local phone book or on the internet. Research the companies you’re interested in thoroughly before getting in touch and if they have a show room then make an impromptu visit to see how you’re treated. Phone a few and make some general enquiries but don’t be pushed into accepting visits if you don’t really like the sound of them for whatever reason. You have to be comfortable with the installer you choose so stick to the tips above and you should have success.
