Types of Double Glazed Windows
The type or style of double glazed window that you choose will depend to a large extent on your personal preferences. There are various options to choose from though including:
Casement windows
Casement windows open like doors, either to the left or the right. They are hinged on one side and generally open outwards away from the house. This type of window is still highly popular, especially with regards to large, picture windows as they give an unobstructed view when open and when closed plus they allow a lot of light into any room. They can also be angled to catch breezes, so helping to circulate air around the house.
Casement windows do have their drawbacks though. One problem is that the outer edges are continually exposed to the weather and if you forget to shut them when bad weather starts, the edges can quickly begin to look weather-beaten and untidy. Dark coloured frames can also begin to fade around the edges when left open for long periods of time in strong sunlight.
It is not unusual to see casement windows with leaded glass patterns. These patterns can help to break up the monotony of a large window while also adding uniqueness to your home.
Tilt and Turn windows
Most new and replacement UPVC windows are of the tilt and turn variety. This style gives you option to either tilt the window inwards slightly or turn it fully and have it wide open. Because you can tilt the windows inward just a small amount, this style is particularly suitable for family homes with small children as you can still ventilate the house without the danger of children falling out or getting fingers trapped.
Alternatively, you can open the windows fully and this allows you to easily clean both the inside and the outside panes. Tilt and turn windows are particularly good for large window spaces as they too provide an unobstructed view and high levels of natural light into a room. They are also easy to open and close as the window opens inwards and not outwards.
Georgian Bar windows
Georgian bar windows are not as popular as they used to be however they are perfect for adding class and uniqueness to a house. They are designed to resemble the patterns used on Georgian period houses and there are literally hundreds of designs available to choose from. The bars are made to exactly match the colour of the window frames so they look like they are actually part of the framework, even though they are often self adhesive strips that attach to the window panes instead.
These are just some of the types and styles of window available from manufacturers today. Most companies will be able to show you a wide range of styles to suit your home so all you have to do is choose the one that matches your personal preferences
